What Causes Tinnitus and Can it Be Prevented?
Tinnitus is the ringing or noise you hear in one or both of your ears that is not caused by an external source. Tinnitus is a common problem within the ears of older adults.
Signs and symptoms of tinnitus include ringing in the ear, which is the most often sign, buzzing, humming, clicking, hissing or roaring. The noise varies from high pitch to low roar to high squeal. These noises tend to interfere with your normal hearing.
Cause of Tinnitus
- Prolonged exposure to loud noise
Loud noise is the most common cause of tinnitus. The noise causes permanent damage to the sound-sensitive cells of the cochlea. It is recommended to use earplugs or earmuffs if you work in an area with a lot of noise, such as construction sites, airports, and manufacturing warehouses. A single exposure to loud noise can also cause tinnitus.
- Illnesses and conditions
Some conditions and illnesses can cause tinnitus. Blockages of the ears due to wax buildup and ear infections can also result in tinnitus. Disease-related to the ear and other medical conditions such as high blood pressure, anaemia and allergies can also cause tinnitus.
- Drugs
Certain drugs list tinnitus as a potential side effect when you consume them.
- Age
Aging causes the deterioration of the cochlea and other parts of the ear.
Can Tinnitus Be Prevented?
Yes, it can be prevented. Below are some ways you can protect yourself against tinnitus.
- Protect your ears
You need to protect your ears from loud noises, especially if you are exposed to these conditions for an extended period. If you work in noisy areas, invest in earplugs or any other hearing protection. When watching concerts or fireworks, protect your ears too. When listening to music using headphones or earbuds, regulate your volume.
- Avoid noisy areas
If you don't work in a noisy environment, avoid them. Also, limit the time you spend in noisy areas.
- Use headphones and earbuds
At times we tend to misuse our headphones by increasing the volume to avoid talking to others. Use your headphones well and ensure the volume is regulated.
